Basic Information

Elm Middle School educates students in grades 6th through 8th grade. We are the Cougars and our school colors are red and black.

All of our students must be residents of Elmwood Park, Ill., a Near West suburb of Chicago with a population of about 25,000. As part of Elmwood Park Community Unit School District 401, Elm is the District's only middle school. 

Mission

Elm’s guiding philosophy and values are summed up in this mission statement:

The faculty, staff, students and community of Elm Middle School are devoted to academic excellence. In addition, we feel it is important for students to develop a sense of self-esteem and confidence in order to ensure success in high school and to enable them to make the correct decisions that will guide them later in life. We believe in individual differences, responsible behavior and an obligation of students to serve their community.

Academics and Support Services

Elm provides instruction in the core academic subjects of language arts, mathematics, science and social studies. Students also receive instruction in physical education and health. Electives in art, band, music, Spanish and technology are offered.

Elm's accelerated learning and academic support programs include opportunities for advanced learners, instruction for English learners, assistance for students with reading difficulties, services for special education students and accommodations for Section 504 students.

Athletics Program

Elm's interscholastic sports teams compete in the Leyden-Norwood Athletic Conference. 

During the fall season the Elm Cougars participate in boys cross country, girls cross country, boys soccer, boys softball, girls softball and girls volleyball. 

In the winter, student-athletes participate in boys basketball, girls basketball, pom-pons and cheerleading. 

The sports year ends with girls soccer and boys volleyball in the spring.

Clubs and Student Activities

Outside of sports, students have numerous opportunities to develop their extracurricular interests, including a vibrant musical program consisting of band and choir. 

Elm's student organizations and activities include Art Club, Cryptography Club, National Junior Honor Society, Photography Club, Robotics, Scholastic Bowl, Student Council and Yearbook.
