Would you rather have 100 days of extra recess or 100 days of no homework? This was one of the many questions students debated on the 100th day of school, Feb. 3!

The 100th day of school is a favorite tradition at our elementary schools, and this year’s celebration was certainly one to remember. Embracing the theme of being "100 days smarter," students and staff went all out to commemorate the occasion.

The excitement was palpable throughout the halls and classrooms of both John Mills and Elmwood. From Kindergarten through 2nd Grade, students were eager to show off their projects and funny outfits. Whether the students were dressed as 100-year-olds with gray hair and spectacles, or wearing custom designed T-shirts, they truly embodied the spirit of the day.

Across both schools, teachers integrated the "100" theme into every corner of their lessons. The day was packed with high-energy activities, including:

  • Building towers out of cups
  • Cereal counting exercises
  • Creating art pieces like crowns, posters, and paper gumball machines
  • Singing festive songs and dancing
  • "Would You Rather?" prompts

Lisa Marzillo’s Kindergarten class stood out, as it encompassed a few of those engaging activities! Students rotated through three themed stations: one for counting Froot Loops, another for stamping paper gumball machines with color, and a final station dedicated to a cup stack challenge. “The 100th Day is always one of my favorites because it’s such a fun way to celebrate how much the students have grown academically and socially since the start of the year,” Marzillo said. “Seeing their creativity, confidence and joy made the day truly memorable for all of us.”
