EPHS Journalism Students Perform Well at Sectionals
Six journalism students' work has scored points for EPHS in this year's Illinois High School Association’s journalism tournament.
Of the six point-scoreres, Beanie Martinico won the sectional championship title in Feature Writing, and Precious Balikpo was the sectional runner-up in Infographics. These placements qualified them for the state championships as well. Along with them, the following students placed:
Giselle Serrano, 4th in Photo Storytelling
Sophia Aquino, 5th in News Writing
Francesca Hall, 5th in Sports Writing
Iris Kupiec, 6th place in Review Writing.
Precious Balikpo (left) and Beanie Martinico (right) qualified for the IHSA state journalism competition.
All students were part of the EPHS journalism program except Balikpo. After creating good work on the DECA team, she was recommended by Business teacher Charles Boland to to submit her work. The unexpected recommendation was a pleasant surprise for her.
“It was nice to be recommended,” she said, “I used to watch my dad make infographics for different companies, so it’s been a fun surprise.”
Going into next year, the students look forward to submitting their work to compete again. Congratulations to our students for their hard work!
