Elmwood Elementary’s Winter Olympic season kicked off last week in Lisa Scimeca’s P.E. classes! Each class from kindergarten to 5th grade met in the main gym and began by learning about what it means to be an Olympian. Ms. Scimeca gave an engaging lesson about the history of the Olympics and why they’re important to the world. She taught about unity, excellence, and shared humanity that the Olympics bring.

Coinciding with the start of the Winter Olympics in Italy this year, each class participated in the ceremonial torch lighting. Students were assigned countries from all over the world to represent, join as a team, and go for the gold.

With activities ranging from bobsledding to luging to cross-country skiing, there was plenty of winter-themed fun for every student to enjoy. Rotating between five different stations, students got to practice their skills before the final competition—and it was clear from the smiles and laughter that everyone was having a blast.

This week marks the final competition, as each P.E. class competes against the countries within their own class. Students take turns competing in each event, with gold medals awarded for top scores. Excitement remains high as Ms. Scimeca also tracks the real-world Olympic medal count throughout the week.

Organizing these events with every single P.E. class in the building, Ms. Scimeca showcases her dedication to her students. She truly goes above and beyond to make sure the kids have a well-rounded understanding of their health, while also teaching valuable lessons about teamwork, sportsmanship, and determination.

As the games wrap up this week, good luck to all teams competing! Coming up next on Elmwood’s P.E. schedule is the Heart Rate Challenge Fundraiser next week. As always, there are exciting things ahead for District 401 students!
